GRADE 1

On 26th October we had a visit from the “Zoo Comes To You”. There were lots of tiny creatures that we were able to touch and learn about.

Some of the interesting and fun facts we learnt about these creatures are:

Millipedes

When they are threatened by a predator, they make a smell which sends a message to all, to keep their distance.

This liquid is iodine and it is helpful to know that this can be rubbed onto our skin when you have a cut as it will help it to get better.

Native Cockroaches

It is easy to tell whether the cockroach is a male or female as the male has a big dip in his forehead and the female has a flat cover over the top of their heads.

These are burrowing animals which have lots of spikes to build the tunnels into the earth.

We need to protect our native cockroaches as they aerate the soil and by doing this, they help the tree roots and so the trees to grow.

Rhino Beetles

These creatures are very helpful for our environment as they eat all the rotten and decayed food, together with leaves and bark.

Only the male have the horns on the top of their heads just like a rhinoceros. They lock their horns with other males to fight for food and territory.

Stick Insects

These creatures are well camouflaged as they just look like dry leaves.

They spend much of their time eating leaves in the trees and when they lay their eggs, these drop to the ground, and the ants take these eggs to their own nests but they leave them untouched!

Have fun reading and thinking about these fascinating facts.
